About Shorea Wood and Linseed Oil
Shorea is possibly the best wood choice for outdoor furniture. Related to Burma teak, this hardwood grows naturally and plentifully in the Pacific Rim countries. Because shorea is dense, heavy, and hard, and contains an abundance of natural oils, it is highly resistant to rot, bug infestation, weather, and marring. Shorea (red lauan) wood will have variations is color - from a red to a yellow cast.

The Shorea wood for this item is treated with linseed oil. Linseed oil is not a varnish. The oil soaks into the pores of the wood leaving a shiny (not glossy) surface that shows off the grain of the wood. Linseed oil helps protects the wood from denting by compression and from accelerated deterioration.

After assembly simply wipe the bench with a damp cloth to remove any excess oil that may be remaining. Please note that it is recommended to let your bench sit outside for 2-3 days before sitting on it to let the stain air out and completely dry.

This bench is even better than I expected - sturdy, comfortable, attractive. My one criticism is that the assembly instructions are a bit confusing, especially for someone with limited technical abilities. That is why I only gave it 4 stars. I'm 5'4" and weigh 120 pounds, and found that assembly would have been much easier with 2 people. However, I wanted to have it put together before my husband got home and did manage on my own with it. I love sitting on my bench and listening to the quiet. I would definitely recommend this product. Excellent quality, great value!

Great bench, but the holes were not drilled properly and still will not accept the screws properly. It is a "production" piece, as the low price reflects. [...] I accepted it only because of being in a hurry for it. I sanded it, and re-stained it on my own. If I was not handy, I would have sent it back.

I read every review of this bench before ordering. Based on those comments, I had two concerns: fit and finish. As to fit, it was fine. It is pretty obvious which way the seat fits the end pieces; not so for the back. It can fit four ways (flipped top to bottom and end to end). When you realize the holes for the nuts should go to the back side, that leaves only flipping it end to end. When I first tried to fit it together, it didn't quite fit; I flipped it end to end and it fit perfectly. As to finish, most types of lumber have different shades in different parts of the tree. This is true of this wood; one or two of the pieces were considerably lighter in color than the mostly reddish brown. It almost looked as though they were unfinished, but I think it was just lighter colored wood. In at least one piece, I could see several shades from the darkest to the lightest in the same piece of wood. That does not diminish the attractiveness. It probably is moot, because in a few months it will weather to a lighter color anyway. It is a really nice bench, well worth the money; and delivery was right on schedule. I am very happy with the purchase.
